Agent scope and guardrails
Workday outlined agents that handle routine work in hiring, payroll, accounting and compliance. The company said the agents inherit each customer's policies, permissions and approval rules, and that every action is logged so customers can review what was done and who approved it. Customers choose which tasks run automatically and how far each agent may go.
Sana, Workday's orchestration engine, is to coordinate agents and bring in people when review or judgment is needed. Product and technology president Gerrit Kazmaier said a good guess is not sufficient in payroll and finance; chief AI officer Joel Hellermark described the agents as autopilots rather than copilots.
Hiring, payroll and accounting tasks
The Talent Acquisition Agent is designed to monitor open roles, flag those at risk of missing fill dates and identify qualified candidates, notifying recruiters through tools such as Slack. Outreach still requires recruiter approval. Workday said the agent can coordinate interview scheduling and draft feedback.
The Payroll Agent is to check payroll before runs, flag missing pay data and audit retroactive adjustments, drafting communications for team review. The Accounting Agent is to extract contract details, prepare entries, recommend revenue recognition and billing schedules, and test transactions continuously to keep audits proactive.
Deployment adoption and timing
Workday said nearly 5,000 customers have activated the Deployment Agent since it was announced in September 2025. The agent is to analyze how customers use Workday, flag unactivated capabilities, project operational impact and prepare configuration and testing plans for approval, and to flag regulatory changes affecting setups.
Autopilot capabilities in the Talent Acquisition Agent are available to early adopters now, with general availability planned for early 2027. Autopilot features for the Payroll, Accounting and Deployment Agents are planned for early adopter customers in early calendar 2027.
