What the index measures

The index measures the real output of US factories, from food processing and chemicals to vehicles and machinery. It is part of the Federal Reserve Board’s monthly G.17 release on industrial production and capacity utilization, and is defined on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) basis, with 2017 set to 100.

The series is seasonally adjusted. Since 2000 its highest reading was 106.6 in December 2007; during the 2020 pandemic shock it fell to 79.9 in April 2020.

The Federal Reserve revises recent months as more complete source data arrive, and periodically revises the whole history, so recent values on this page can change. The page is checked against the latest published figures every day; monthly changes are calculated by BureauLine from the official index.
