THE OPERATING BRIEF

The story in focus

French officials reported nearly 1,000 arrests after nationwide cost-of-living protests, with the interior ministry estimating 410,000 participants versus union counts near 800,000. About 70,000 officers were deployed; clashes followed mostly peaceful marches in Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux and other cities, with far fewer businesses looted than a week earlier.

  • Interior ministry estimated 410,000 protesters across about 298 demonstrations; unions put the figure at roughly 800,000.
  • Nearly 1,000 arrests were reported, a number the interior minister said would rise.
  • About 70,000 police officers were deployed nationwide, with restrictions imposed in several cities.
  • Officials said the scale of looting was far smaller than a week earlier, when around 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted.

Crowd counts and policing

The interior ministry said about 410,000 people joined roughly 298 protests on Saturday, while the CGT union put participation at around 800,000. No explanation for the gap was immediately available. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said up to 70,000 officers were deployed nationwide with helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannons. He later reported nearly 1,000 arrests and said the figure would increase.

In Paris, police counted 110,000 marchers and unions 250,000. The route was moved at short notice from Bastille to Porte d'Italie. Nuñez said several thousand radical activists gathered at the rear of the march, including about 500 identified as rioters, and clashes lasted about two hours. The Paris prosecutor's office said 64 people were arrested and 40 placed in custody, mostly over suspected weapons offenses or participation in a group preparing violence.

Transport and business disruption

Clashes followed largely peaceful daytime marches. Police fired tear gas and water cannon in Paris, barricades burned in Marseille and protesters pulled boards from a building in Bordeaux to build a street barricade. Tear gas was also deployed in Nantes, Clermont-Ferrand and Strasbourg, and Lyon police dispersed crowds in areas deemed off-limits.

Nuñez said some shops and businesses were looted, but at a far smaller scale than a week earlier, when he said around 3,000 businesses were damaged or looted. The CCI estimated last weekend's damage at hundreds of millions of euros. Officials credited more pre-demonstration checks, faster police action and better protection of businesses and shopping centers.

Next steps

Nuñez said two people were seriously injured, in Toulouse and Clermont-Ferrand. The Yellow Vests group called for further protests on Oct. 31, including rallies and a sit-in outside parliament. The unrest, which began in September over school conditions and living costs, comes six months before presidential elections.

How many police officers did France deploy during Saturday's protests?

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said up to 70,000 officers were deployed nationwide, supported by helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannons. Nearly 1,000 arrests were reported, a figure he said would rise.
